50 Facts

  1. My earliest memory is toddling around a coffee table before I could confidently walk on my own.
  2. My favorite vegetable is asparagus.
  3. I experienced occasional night terrors from about age 10 – 12.
  4. I wish I had not quit playing soccer my senior year of high school.
  5. I love pasta sauce and salsa but I cannot stand raw tomatoes.
  6. I have over 40 first cousins and cousins’ children and lots and lots of uncles and aunts. We are a blend of Mexican, Irish, and various other western European people. (Catholic + Irish + Mexican = lots of babies)
  7. I don’t know too much about astrology, but I am a Pisces and I do have a close relationship with water.
  8. I have two sisters. One died on June 9, 2005 when she was hit by a truck while riding her bike to work. I miss her, and you will read about her often in this blog. One lives 3,000 miles away from me and I talk to her almost every single day. I love her.
  9. I love living in the Pacific Northwest.
  10. Except when it rains for 40 days and 40 nights. Without stopping.
  11. I have absolutely no good sense of direction.
  12. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 1998-2000.
  13. I am a good friend. I cherish my friendships – they’ve seen me through so much and continue to motivate and inspire me.
  14. Among my close and wonderful friends are three women named Gretchen.
  15. Berry picking is one of my favorites things to do.
  16. Running is my greatest delight, my challenge and my therapy.
  17. I am a mother to two amazing boys.
  18. I long to travel again.
  19. I have wanted to be a writer since I was eleven years old.
  20. When I was really young I wanted to be a singer but I sing pretty badly.
  21. Watching my son write his name correctly for the first time was one of my sweetest parenting moments.
  22. I tend to be a little impulsive.
  23. My favorite book that became my favorite movie is the English Patient.
  24. I recently applied to be an assistant coach for Girls on the Run.
  25. I love car camping.
  26. My dessert of choice is wine.
  27. If I had given birth to a daughter, I would have named her Elizabeth.
  28. But I am DONE having kids!
  29. I bought canning supplies to preserve all the berries we picked this year, and instead, we ate the berries and the supplies are in the basement.
  30. Our dog is a feisty black Labrador retriever mix named after the cyclist Fausto Coppi.
  31. My husband is my best friend.
  32. Public water fountains creep me out.
  33. I cry easily.
  34. I am good at hiding it.
  35. While talking about how bees make honey, I did not tell my eldest son he was wrong when he came to the conclusion that hummingbirds make hummus.
  36. I used to want to be a calligrapher and I would practice writing script for hours.
  37. I almost always have a running event on the calendar for which I am training (or should be training).
  38. My father is one of my personal heroes.
  39. And so is my mother.
  40. I struggle not to bite my nails.
  41. I don’t watch television.
  42. But I do have an Internet addiction.
  43. Calla lilies are my favorite flower.
  44. My favorite place to be is by an ocean.
  45. I speak Spanish fluently.
  46. I would love to live in Mexico with my family someday.
  47. For my 40th birthday (not for another three years), I want my husband to give me surfing lessons. In Hawaii, please.
  48. Writing gives me so much joy.
  49. My favorite fruits are mangoes and pomegranates.
  50. I kept my maiden name.

    You need to take another look at #6. By my count we’re well above 40 (counting cousin’s kids and new additions)! Eva turned me on to your blog. Looks nice. Next US trip, west coast. Hope you’ll have room!

    I love your list Sara.It brings back so many memories of you from when we were in college and post college. I’ll never forget our wonderful trip to cocoa beach after our disastrous time in Daytona beach. Who knew it was biker week? Miss you and love you. Keep writing – you are very gifted. xoxo leslie

      Thank you so much Leslie! That trip to Cocoa Beach was so fun, but the memory of us arriving in the middle of Biker Week is priceless. And that hostel! OMG! What were we thinking? I think I was the one to book the hostel – SORRY! 🙂
