Bucket List for the New Year

Resolutions. I will turn 38 years old in 2012. In the spirit of welcoming the New Year, I have prepared a list of 38 tasks I plan to attempt to do or achieve during the next twelve months.

A note on resolutions: among the top five annual resolutions made by Americans are “lose weight” and “quit smoking”. As life-changing as both of these practices may be, my bucket list does not involve weight loss or smoking cessation, as at this time I believe they are unnecessary. Hooray!

Now a look at what (I hope) lies ahead. Please consider joining me for the journey!

My bucket list for 2012

  1. See a sunrise from somewhere other than my car.
  2. Teach our eldest son to ride a two-wheeler.
  3. Acquire first passports for boys.
  4. Use them.
  5. Run one half marathon that I’ve never run before.
  6. Watch Casablanca (again) at least once with husband.
  7. Reach out to bloggers outside of the United States.
  8. If the right moment and image presents itself, get another tattoo.
  9. Take something home hot & homemade to a new mom.
  10. Learn a Spanish lullaby.
  11. Sing it to my children.
  12. Photograph a rainbow.
  13. Secure a literary agent.
  14. Make paella. Or sancocho. Share with friends.
  15. Run more. Run often.
  16. Rid the house of all bottles and pacifiers.
  17. When the skies finally clear, stargaze.
  18. Vote for the incumbent!
  19. Renew my passport.
  20. Visit Canada for the first time.
  21. Cook something that my grandmother Irene used to cook (source: a special cookbook gifted to me by my Aunt Marie).
  22. Be more tolerant.
  23. Attend a meeting of the Oregon Beekeepers Association.
  24. Take boys to the top of the Space Needle.
  25. Do the Shred every day for thirty days.
  26. Soak in hot springs in the middle of the woods.
  27. Complete my book proposal.
  28. Camp in Mt Hood National Forest.
  29. Go to Yosemite National Park (before a close friend living there leaves).
  30. Meet my nephew expected to join the world in early May!
  31. Attend a meeting of the Compassionate Friends. Reach out to other bereaved siblings.
  32. Complete an open water swim of a challenging distance.
  33. Go on one meditation retreat, even if it takes place in my basement.
  34. Write a letter to the editor.
  35. Plan and execute an excellent five-year-old birthday party.
  36. Hike Silver Falls.
  37. Drag out the crock pot. Use it!
  38. Forgive someone.

They sound much more acheivable than most people’s resolution lists! Top of my bucket list for 2012?
Give birth to my baby boy in May.
Spend more time outdoors with my 2 year old girl.
Visit my parents in Belgium at least 3 times (this seems a bit of a cheat since I have done that the last 2 years anyway!)
Go on a few ‘dates’ with my husband.
Hope you have a lovely weekend celebrating the start of a new year. xx

  3. Love your bucket list!! Happy New Year to ya!!

  5. YOU HAVE TO USE YOUR CROCKPOT. I have had mine (not kidding) for 8 years and just started actually using it to cook meals in this past year. Changed my whole life. Seriously amazing. allrecipes.com has some great ideas for it.

  9. Looks like an interesting year for you! Good luck!

  10. What a great list! I’d put crockpot, passports, tolerance, and voting for the incumbent at the top of the list — but then we must all make our own choices. That’s the point of a bucket list and yours was fascinating.

I love your list. Now I want to learn a spanish lullabye. And sing it to my kids. Would also like to learn to spell.

Sara- thankfully there’s some overlap between your list and mine so I don’t have to accomplish twice as much! I suggest going to the post office in Vancouver for passports. It was quick and easy. We also anticipated using them for Canada (which may still happen) but we’re also looking to see our friends in Geneva as well. Silver Falls. Check. Yosemite. Check. Space Needle. Check. (Sophie loved it.) I need to see my friends more often, including you. Help me reach my goals? Maybe passport visit and lunch together?

That’s a terrific goal and I’d be pleased to help you reach it! Yes- I will check my calendar & find a date to get to Vancouver soon! Happy New Year!
